ASI: Then working with him must have been rewarding?

CARTIER: His stories always impressed me. Any time I got a story from him, I could read it and know what I was going to depict. Some of the other writers, I would read their stories and I wouldn’t get anything out of the story itself.

With Hubbard there was always something, something there you could read, something you could find to illustrate.

I remember one writer. I was supposed to draw something for Unknown. I read the story, and I couldn’t get anything out of it at all. It was just two men sitting there conversing. There was nothing there to illustrate. So I called up Campbell and said, “I can’t get an idea at all, you’ll have to prompt me some way or other. This is nothing like Hubbard’s work at all.”

I told Hubbard himself, I said, “One thing that I like about your stories, I can get something to illustrate – there is something there always. Your words flow on – they mean something to me. You talk about swashbuckling guys and demons.” I liked to draw those demons. His stories always gave me something to draw. There was always something there.

That’s when I started with Hubbard and he liked my work. He said we were a good combination. I felt honored to have him think that of me. He even wrote a book one time and called me a cohort of his.
