ASI: Then working with him must have been rewarding? CARTIER: His stories always impressed me. Any time I got a story from him, I could read it and know what I was going to depict. Some of the other writers, I would read their stories and I wouldnt get anything out of the story itself. With Hubbard there was always something, something there you could read, something you could find to illustrate. I remember one writer. I was supposed to draw something for Unknown. I read the story, and I couldnt get anything out of it at all. It was just two men sitting there conversing. There was nothing there to illustrate. So I called up Campbell and said, I cant get an idea at all, youll have to prompt me some way or other. This is nothing like Hubbards work at all. I told Hubbard himself, I said, One thing that I like about your stories, I can get something to illustrate there is something there always. Your words flow on they mean something to me. You talk about swashbuckling guys and demons. I liked to draw those demons. His stories always gave me something to draw. There was always something there.
Thats when I started with Hubbard and he liked my work. He said we were a good combination. I felt honored to have him think that of me. He even wrote a book one time and called me a cohort of his.
